Matt Manfred joins Bishop Guilfoyle cross country in his 17th year of coaching distance runners, including 12 years with the Penn State Altoona cross country team and a previous tenure with Bishop Guilfoyle track and field.

A graduate of Geneva College, Manfred began his coaching career at Blackhawk High School (Beaver Falls, PA) as head coach of cross country and track and field. Beginning in 2004, he assisted with the cross country teams at Penn State Altoona and in 2007 became co-head coach with his wife, Heidi Manfred. For nine years, 2007-2015, Matt and Heidi lead Penn State Altoona runners and were twice named Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year. Their final season in 2015 included an individual AMCC conference men’s champion and a new women’s school 5K record.

Manfred has also coached previously at Bishop Guilfoyle. For the 2007-2009 spring seasons, Matt and Heidi served as head boys’ and head girls’ coaches for the BG track and field teams. In each of those three years, Bishop Guilfoyle was represented at the PIAA state championship meet, and in total, Marauder athletes rewrote 19 of 34 school records. Matt also served as an assistant coach with the BG cross country teams in Coach Joe Bilka’s 20th and final 2017 season as well as this Spring’s track team.

Matt Manfred works as an adult education distance learning instructor and communications specialist with the Tuscarora Intermediate Unit and the Manfreds have three children in Holy Trinity Catholic School.
